Interview with Mikayla Mazur

1.What inspired you to start

After graduating high school, I went through a time of intense self-reflection. Interest and experience within the field of psychology propelled me along with what has become a very intimate journey-examination-of the things that make me tick. Aware of my mind and how it works, I relate my experience of life to that of a character in a movie-or-more preferably a dancer in the ballet- a living, thriving, aspect of what is an incredibly intricate, rather stunning second/image/experience. I see from the outside in and this works for photography. I love it.

MYP12. When did you realize you wanted to start a/become a photographer?

I realized I wanted to become a photographer when I found myself working part time jobs…while my mind was doing fifteen really odd things, just absolutely nothing relating to waitressing. After pursuing photography and receiving positive feedback, my drive to pursue the art as a career grew and grew.

3. What does your craft mean to you?

Photography has become a beautiful channel for me. With the Camera, I can not only see anything, but see it however I would like to. I am touched when somebody appreciates what I have made. It feels like giving a very wonderful Gift.

4. Who is one of your inspirations?

I have a very good friend who is also a photographer. We met through our camera and have grown as friends over the past year. I see him, another young and developing artist, so driven and so kind. He’s an inspiration in many ways.

5. What keeps you motivated?

As I brush my teeth, I acknowledge my gratitude’s- Love,Health, art, coffee, etc.  I have a world to explore, things to see and feel. Discovering new art is always inspiration. Learning in general is.

myp36. How would you define your personal style?

My style fluctuates. Lately, my images have included unusual color palettes and exposure levels-leading from fashion and imagery of early-mid 20th century. I see a lot of playful composition and sensuality-though light- in these. Countering that is a dark trip through wonderland-using drastic blurring, contrast and double exposure composition. I don’t know if depends on myself or the photo.

7. What is your favorite thing about your job?

I get to make things. I can create any world, story, idea, or feeling. I work and learn how to create it beautifully. Photography is a diverse art. I spend hours alone, in nature, on the computer doing edits, composing a shot…then to also be on the stage at a performance, interacting and having fun with the crowd, or working with a bundle of kids!

8. Any pregame rituals?

Confidence and good music!

myp49. What is the most important thing to you about your brand?

That it is wholly true, both in content and in conduct, to who I am.

10. What is a interesting fact about yourself?

I grew up on a dairy farm and had a job of feeding the babies with bottles.

11. What advice would you give to someone who would like to become a photographer?

Tell yourself every day that you can do anything. See everything. Look, always.

12. Where do you want to be in 5 years?

In five years, I will have graduated school, been to Paris, and learned to shoot and develop film! I will pursue interests in fashion photography, publishing editorials online, and in magazine. This girl would love nothing more than to be living independently and healthyfully creating art, and making an income via Photography.
