Lupita Nyong’o is a Kenyan actress who’s breakout role in the 2013 drama, 12 Years A Slave, has whirl winded her into major success.
She was recently named most beautiful woman by People’s Magazine & has appeared on the front cover of numerous magazines since her role in the film.
With all of this sudden success, inquiring minds are wondering what is the obsession with Lupita N’Yongo?
We are all very proud for Lupita & we can not deny her grace & talent, but why is it beginning to appear that this young woman is being shoved down our throats? It’s almost like Hollywood has an ulterior motive, which wouldn’t be surprising. Hollywood has this trend of taking a really dark-skinned actress every few years & immediately catapulting her into ultimate success. This is the same thing they did with Gabourey Sidibe a few years ago. What’s really going on Hollywood?
Lupita is being praised everywhere we look. She is everywhere! We appreciate that we are giving girls someone to admire besides the Rihannas & Beyonces, but we would appreciate even more if Hollywood wouldn’t strictly praise racial extremes within our culture. You’re either racially ambiguous or the exact opposite in order to get attention in Hollywood within the black community.
And let’s also not forget, there are plenty of other beautiful, black women with poise in Hollywood other then just Lupita. Let’s give our young girls more options to admire. Let’s allow them the freedom to choose from a number of class acts to model after. There isn’t just one.
