“Orange Is the New Black” star Dascha Polanco may be getting some real life practice behind bars. Polanco who plays inmate character Dayanara Diaz, may be facing charges for allegedly beating up a teenage girl. The 33-year-old actress is accused of beating up a 17-year—old girl in her apartment in New York City.
Polanco was taken into custody July 29 after the victim, Michelle Cardona, told officials that Polanco had, “Hit the face and head with a closed fist at least three times,” The actress was scheduled to appear in court August 21 but a conflicting schedule prevented that from happening, so the date was moved to December 3; which also happened to be the actress birthday.
Polanco’s attorney Gerald Lefcourt is arguing that fight was a scam to extort money from the actress. Lefcourt said in a phone call with HuffPost that Cardona offered to drop the charges in exchange for a payoff — and that he has proof.
“This woman was trying to extort Dascha, and her attempts were tape recorded,” Lefcourt told HuffPost. “The District Attorney has the tapes, and we expect this case to be dismissed.” As stated in the post.
When the actress did appear in court she faced charges up to four counts of assault and harassment, with the main charge being assault with intent to cause physical injury. This is a class A misdemeanor, which can be punishable by up to a year in prison.
Polanco’s next hearing will be July 2016.
