This week, celebrity chef Sandra Lee was diagnosed with with breast cancer, after having a routine mammogram. Specifically, she was diagnosed with DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ), which is a common noninvasive cancer. However, over time, it can become invasive if left untreated. She opened up about this personal struggle on Good Morning America.
Sandra claims that she was beyond shocked after she found this out and told PEOPLE that “Life can turn on a dime.”
Lee has decided to undergo a double mastectomy because she does not want to go through weeks of radiation treatment.
She has started to record her thoughts and medical appointments in a video diary. After this is all over, she plans to spread the word about early great cancer detection.
