I had the incredible pleasure of being invited to attend a concert with some amazing performers and watch Salt Lake City come alive on April 2nd at the Depot downtown. There is nothing I enjoy more than a night out on the town with good friends and live music (except a night out with good friends and country music!) The lineup for the show included Canaan Smith and Dan and Shay. The standing room on both floors were packed with attendees of all ages. As I stood on the Mezzanine level with a whiskey-ginger in hand, every individual (and I) eagerly waited for the start of the headliner’s set while their opening act, Canaan Smith performed. The front of house engineer for the band made sure to get the crowd pumped by playing a variety of jams just before the set started.

The country duo, (Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney) positively killed it at their sold out show in Utah. I consider myself to be a die-hard appreciator of music, a band-aid if you will, as it is safe to say that in my 22 years of living I have attended over 150 live musical performances. I can honestly say that this was one of the top 5 best shows I’ve ever seen (their last show with Blake Shelton and the Band Perry in September holds a spot in my top 5 as well.) It is impressive to imagine that Dan and Shay met in December of 2012 and less than two years later were opening for Hunter Hayes on his We’re Not Invisible Tour. The group also accompanied Hunter Hayes on his Tattoo (Your Name) Tour. It is certainly commendable how quickly these individuals have made a name for themselves, and they’ve worked incredibly hard to be here. It’s no shocker though, with voices like this some magic is bound to happen for them! It is evident that this duo is the ultimate threat, as they can master re-creating songs from any genre of music. There are so many pop artists that burn out as quickly as they come in hot, yet Dan and Shay are here to stay and dominate the charts, and they’re not only competition for other country artists, but all popular music artists of today.

Their set list included the following songs from “Where It All Began” :

“Nothin’ Like You”

“19 You + Me”

“Stop Drop and Roll”

“Show You Off”

“Parking Brake”

“Party Girl”

In addition to these fan favorites, they also covered a few crowd-pleasing hits, “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” a Led Zeppelin original as well as Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking out loud.” Dare I say it (though all other attendees will agree with me…) their rendition of “Thinking Out Loud,” gets an A plus, top gun rating. Don’t you worry, Ed we’ll always love you. Not to mention, the fans were stoked to hear a song that has yet to be released off of their upcoming album…a track titled “Partner in Crime.” Their stage presence just another characteristic that sets this group out from the newcomers and amateurs. These two always express their graciousness and love for their fans in addition to insisting on an Instagram photo of the evening’s beautiful crowd, flashing their “plus sign” logo.

PS. Do your ears a favor and take a listen to Dan and Shay covering “Thinking Out Loud” on the Bobby Bones Radio Show here:

The band performed in Salt Lake City alongside Blake Shelton and The Band Perry in September 2014…with fewer band members. This time, the group brought an additional electric guitar player and a bass player. The vocals sounded extraordinary compared to all of the venues I’ve attended and the audio from each instrument was on point. This show was truly a treat for my senses and left me feeling all the vibes for days following. The addition of group members and instrument layering truly enhanced the live experience, giving each track more musical depth and variation. I must give mad props to the group’s live sound recording and mixing engineer, Taylor Bray.

These two are going to blow the current cookie-cutter pop group and artist’s popularity out of the water. This group will be on the road travelling across the country promoting the “Where It All Began” tour until July 23rd. Their most recent appearance was at The 50th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards hosted by CBS on Sunday, April 19th 2015 at 8/7c.
